East Providence to Fisherman's Memorial State Park
I woke up and checked out of the motel. I went to a gas station across the street where I bought breakfast of a muffin and juice plus a Rhode Island road map. The map had a listing of campgrounds and I decided to try to get out to one of them for the night, preferably one near the beach. I decided to walk to Providence. I decided that i would walk to the public transportation hub and figure out where to go from there.
I walked through some nice neighborhoods and past Brown University. I find Providence to be an impressive, clean city. Finally I made it to downtown and through dumb luck I happened to walk right into the bus hub. I looked at the transit map and figured that I could take a bus to Narragansett and then walk to Fisherman's Memorial State Park where there is a campground. The park also happens to be near the ocean! So that's what I did and here I am in site 129. I even walked to a state beach and rode some waves in the ocean.
I called my dad and informed him of the change in meeting location. I will meet him here tomorrow at about 2:30. Before that I may go back to the beach. It seems that things, though at one time seemingly helpless, have turned out pretty well!

Albany to Boston to Rhode Island
Albany Skyline |
What a day! Ate my breakfast, then headed to the train station to wait for my train. I waited about three hours and read some before boarding my train for Boston. It was a pretty long ride from Albany to Boston. I sat next to a guy who was headed to Beantown to visit his son. He had come all the way from Minnesota.
Finally we arrived in Boston and I left South Station and hit the streets totally lost. Finally, while looking like a total tourist, I pulled out my map and got my bearings. Rather than take the subway, I walked to the hostel straight down Boylston Street and past some fancy stores. When I arrived at the hostel it was booked solid. In addition, all the hotels in town and as far as Cape Cod were booked. I went to the YMCA, but they were full as well. I wasn't sure what to do so I walked back to the train station, passing Fenway Park along the way. It felt pretty amazing to be so close to that old, famous stadium. Inside the Sox were playing the Indians.
Eventually, I made it back to the train station and was starving. I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast. I got some food at McDonald's and tried to devise a plan of action. I thought about just going home, but no trains left for Philadelphia until the next morning. I also thought about just hanging around the train station all night, but it closes at 3 am. While eating, I overheard a guy say that he was staying in Providence, Rhode Island. I decided to take a train to South Attleboro, Massachusetts. This is the closest stop to Providence that the train still goes to this late.
At 11:15 pm my train left South Station. By about 1 am I was in South Attleboro. At 1:15 I crossed into Rhode Island for my first time. Once again my first foray into a new state was on foot. I walked around Pawtucket and decided to try to make it to the beach by dawn. Eventually I found myself in East Providence. At 3 am a police officer pulled over and questioned me. I told him my story and he directed me to a cheap hotel: the New Yorker. My room was fairly clean until I saw the bathroom. I didn't care though, I was too tired. That room ended up costing me $65.

Albany, New York
Woke up at the Inn at the Long Trail, ate breakfast, and then I packed up my stuff and took the bus to Rutland. I mailed some things home from the post office and then went to the train station. I knew I would soon be hungry and so I stashed my pack in some bushes behind the nearby shopping center and went into Price Chopper where I bought some candy and a sandwich. Then I went into Walmart where I bought a Gatorade. I still had plenty of time before my train departed so I sat in the station and read for a while. Finally the train arrived and before I knew it I was in Albany.
It's a pretty nice city, but there aren't many hotels. I finally found a Ramada near the bus station. It ended up costing me $75. Oh well, tomorrow I'm headed to Boston!

Acadia National Park: The Precipice to Cadillac Mountain
Woke up and went out to breakfast at the Log Cabin restaurant. Then Mr. Pluta dropped Dan and I off to go hiking. We started at the "Precipice" and finished off on Cadillac Mountain. It didn't rain but it was cloudy all day with few views. Mr. Pluta picked us up and we went to a friend of his who lived near Acadia. Tomorrow we head into Canada!
